The course, thematically arranged, considers calligraphy within a variety of contexts (i.e. archaeological, cultural, historical, social and religious) to study the form, materiality and history of calligraphy. Other aspects such as social status of calligraphers and collectors, collecting practices, technologies and impact of printing, modern writing reform and national identity, as well as the computerization of writing will be covered.
