This conference brought together approximately 150 scholars who conduct research on the humanities of China during the ninth to fourteenth centuries. This prestigious conference first convened at Harvard University in 2014 and will gather for its third iteration in Singapore in 2020. The Department sent four scholars to Leiden to discuss research:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current Ph.D. postgraduate Candy Ge Yau Leung<\/strong>\u00a0discussed her research in the paper \u201cConstructing a new pantheon of Confucian worthies: Portraits of four Yuan scholars,\u201d from her 2016 M. Phil. thesis entitled \u201cRepresenting the Literatus: Portraiture and identity in Yuan Figure Painting,\u201d University of Hong Kong;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finearts.hku.hk\/faculty\/ruby-leung\/\">Lecturer Dr. Ruby Pui Yi Leung<\/a>\u00a0delivered the paper \u201cRepresenting Universal Principle: Bamboo painting in Yuan-dynasty China (1271-1368)\u201d which is based on research from her Ph.D. thesis \u201cBamboo in Principle: Ke Jiusi\u2019s (1290-1349) Paintings and Knowledge in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368)\u201d completed in 2016, University of Hong Kong;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current Ph.D. postgraduate Konstance Chun Tung Li<\/strong>\u00a0presented on \u201cThe Khan\u2019s New Robes: Marking the Mongol Imperium\u2019s Presence in the Yonglegong\u00a0<em>Chaoyuantu<\/em>\u00a0Mural Painting,\u201d material from his M. Phil thesis, \u201cEnvisioning Authority: The Mongol Imperium and the Yonglegong Mural Paintings and Architecture\u201d of 2012, University of Hong Kong; and<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finearts.hku.hk\/faculty\/dr-roslyn-l-hammers\/\">Associate Professor Roslyn Lee Hammers<\/a>\u00a0introduced her research in progress in a paper entitled \u201cNature manipulated: Artifice and hybridity in the Song-painting\u00a0<em>Calico Cat under Peonies.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to discussing and debating their own research findings, members of the Department of Fine Arts enjoyed attending other sessions to hear and reflecting on the current state of research on the humanities of Middle-period China.
