In September 1978, Professor\u00a0Chuang\u00a0Shen\u00a0with the aid of a few supporting staff members set up the Department in a corner of the\u00a0Fung\u00a0Ping\u00a0Shan Museum. In that first year, there were 11 students who signed up for the very first course that the Department offered. In the 30 years since then, the Department has seen many changes: the addition of new teachers, office staff, and teaching areas; the move to the\u00a0Main\u00a0Building; and the growth of student numbers from a handful to over\u00a0800 in\u00a02007-2008. We feel that this is an occasion worth celebrating, and we are planning several activities throughout the academic year in honor of our anniversary. The key events are listed below.
