“Self-Seer” II (Death and Man)

The Self-Seers (Death and Man) is a double self-portrait of Schiele. A gaunt Schiele sinks towards a patchwork landscape while a grey and bloodless version rises up, a mirror of the other. It relates to the theme of the Doppelgänger, a person’s exact double who turns up at the moment of that person’s death. There are three versions on the self-seers.
