Judith II

Judith II

This painting is a preliminary sketch by Klimt with a combination of a few medium. Klimt often tried out different compositions in sketches for his painting in simple line drawing, with pencil, graphite, chalk or crayon. It is a rare coloured work on paper.

The movement of a flamenco dancer is captured in this study. There is a strong contrast between her white skin and her dark hair and dancing dress. Klimt continued to make variations through sketches to develop his idea for the final painting. His final product can be very different from his preliminary sketches. Nevertheless, the drawing shows the common interest in the dancing body with other artists such as Schiele.
