Venus Wan
Post-graduate student
Contributor to the Hong Kong Art History Principal Timeline
Venus graduated with a double-degree in BA(Literary Studies) and LLB from the University of Hong Kong in 2021. She studied design in her high school and is enthusiastic about art. What she did not realise before entering into HKU was that art history is not just about the aesthetic but essentially a part of the ‘greater history’, whereas understanding the art history means to unravel more about a place, a space, a time and the social constructs therein.
Wanted to know more about her hometown through the lens of art, Venus took Dr Koon’s Hong Kong Art Workshop class in which she met inspiring people, had fun (amidst the pandemic) and reflected deeply on culture, space and the making of art history. In compiling her timeline project for the course, she for the first time stepped into a physical archive and discovered a lot of interesting facts about Hong Kong (at a time before her) and the local art scene. The process was admittedly demanding but also rewarding as she saw a larger picture unfolded with information filling in the gaps for her knowledge about the city with fresh perspectives.
Currently, Venus is pursuing a postgraduate study in laws and aiming to become a lawyer; however, she is considering a study or career in art further, further down the road for her favour in art persists — and for art is just so much more fun.
