Cheung graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Taiwan Normal University in 1958. He founded the Circle Group with other local artists in 1963, and was also a founding member of the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild in 1987. Having obtained a grant from the Institute of International Education, he went to the USA and Europe in 1965. Between 1968 and 1973, Cheung was tutor at the Extramural Studies Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong. He was Part-time lecturer at the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1976 and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic from 1978 to 1983. He was Lecturer of the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1983 and Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1984 to 1992. Cheung received the OBE in 1979, and the Sculptor of the Year Award from the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild in 1988. He has been Chairman of the Hong Kong Sculptors Association; Advisor of the Visual Art Society, Hong Kong; Advisor of the Hong Kong Museum of Art; etc. Since 1964 he has organized sixteen one-man shows in Hong Kong, London. Manila, U.S.A and Taiwan, and has also participated in numerous group shows and print Exhibitions as well. His works may be found in various museums and private collections, both in Hong Kong and abroad.
