La Ville dans la Baguette (La Ville dans la Baguette, la baguette dans la ville)
(
2004 ) Community art
A production of Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts. The work was a response to Lille2004 – Cultural Capital of Europe, the campaign granting potential cities / regions a year of cultural redevelopment. However, like Art Historian Miwon Kwon once wrote, "…as such endeavours to engage art in the nurturing of specificities of locational difference gather momentum, there is a greater and greater urgency in distinguishing between the cultivation of art and places, and their appropriation for the promotion of cities as cultural commodities." Moreover, questions were also raised on the effectiveness of the interaction between these campaigns, public artworks and its local community. Between February and May of 2004, various workshops were created for children of a local community in Tourcoing, France. 40 children from age 5-10 were invited to create personal drawings that reflected their feelings towards their neighbourhood. Their drawings were grouped in 6 versions and distributed back to the community through printing them on the Baguette wrapping paper. Using the bakery shop as an outlet for dialogue, the project tries to promote a positive sense of community by introducing imagination, colours, and interaction for the local.
