How did the work 14 years old & the world & borders come into being?
In 2012, I moved from Tokyo to Asa city. One day, I found a small and beautiful river near my new house. This river’s name is “Sakaigawa”, which means, “Border River”. I started to do research about this river. This river divided two countries from a long time ago, and I started to interview people around this river.
Your works often extend stories from daily, everyday objects. Why are these objects important to your art practice?
Around 2001, I started making artworks as a photographer. Corrections and interviews are important for me, from everyday life and landscapes. At first I correct, and sometimes I start to edit. I often correct a lot.
You once said: “I have quietly collected border lines on my own travels. Lines that have been drawn by someone else, even the national borders.” As an artist, what kind of borders is important to you?
I don’t have an answer as an artist. I think it’s education about history, and common sense. Education and common sense are very important, I think.

<14세 & 세계 & 경계>의 탄생 배경을 알려주세요.
2012 년에 저는 도쿄에서 아사시로 이사했습니다. 어느 날 저는 이사한 집 근처에 있는 작고 아름다운 강을 발견했지요. 이 강의 이름은 “사카이가와”로, 번역하면 “경계 강” 이라는 뜻입니다. 이내 저는 이 강에 대해서 조사하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 이 강이 예전부터 두 국가를 나눴었다는 걸 알아냈고, 저는 이 강 주위에 사는 사람들을 인터뷰하기 시작했습니다.
작가님의 작품은 일상적인 물건들의 연장선인데요, 이런 물건들이 작가님의 작품활동에서 왜 중요한가요?
2001년도즈음 저는 사진작가로써 작품활동을 시작했습니다. 저에게는 일상생활과 풍경으로부터 찾을 수 있는 개선점과 인터뷰가 아주 중요합니다. 처음에는 수정도 하였고, 가끔은 편집도 합니다. 주로 수정 작업을 많이 합니다.
작가님께서 “나는 여행을 하며 찬찬히 경계선을 모았다. 국경선을 포함한 그 선들은 다른 누군가에 의해 그려진 것이다”라고 말씀하셨는데요, 작가님에게 중요한 경계(border)에는 무엇이 있나요?
작가로서 딱히 말씀드릴 답은 없습니다. 제가 중요시 여기는 경계는 역사교육과 상식입니다. 제 생각에 그 둘은 아주 중요합니다.
