Treading a Fine Line? Art History Meets Curatorship

Is it possible to think of language and image, discourse and art works as equally valent? It stands to reason that curators and art historians would have a different answer to this question, as they have different disciplinary socialisations, different tools and methods, different experiences with art. My lecture will not clarify these differences, but instead experiment in conflating both approaches. It will do so by focussing on work by Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi (1937-1990).

Speaker: Ruth Noack

Ruth Noack is Head of Programme, Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London. Trained as a visual artist and art historian, she has acted as art critic, university lecturer and exhibition maker since the 1990s. Noack has curated many notable exhibitions of contemporary art, including documenta 12 (Kassel, 2007) which she co-curated with Roger M. Buergel. Not Dressed for Conquering – Ines Doujak’s Loomshuttles/Warpaths, curated by Noack with Royal College of Art Curating Contemporary Art MA students, is currently presented in the College galleries. She is presently working on a show called Sleeping with a Vengeance − Dreaming of a Life. Noack’s reviews and monographic essays have appeared in numerous journals and catalogues. Her book on Sanja Ivekovic was published by Afterall in February of 2013. Ruth Noack is a participating speaker at the Para Site International Conference 2013, April 11-13 at Asia Society.
