This course introduces artistic practices and material culture in Africa. Overviewing the diversity of African practices, styles, and mediums, it ranges from the earliest sculptural traditions to modern developments in the 20^th century, analyzing art, architecture, and material culture in relation to religious beliefs, social identity, political organization, and the radical changes brought by colonialism and modernity.
