Perspective in art history [capstone]

Lecturer: Sim Hinman WAN

6 credits

This seminar course explores the artistic representation of cities from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. While most of the cases we study are concerned with Europe and how Europeans perceived foreign cultures, we will also approach the subject from multiple perspectives by looking at concurrent innovations in the other continents. Intended for students in their fourth year who have already engaged seriously with art history during their previous study, the course aims to deepen their understanding of the discipline. It interrogates prevailing scholarship by exploring both the general parameters and specific fields of art history. Case studies consider modes of interpretation in combination with primary documents, secondary interpretations, and historiography. Active participation from students is required.
