Hogarth and the Other
Date: 12 October 2012 (Friday)
Time: 5:45-7:15pm
Venue: Room 4.04, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
Speaker: Peter Wagner
Dr. Peter Wagner, Professor of English Studies, University of Koblenz-Landau, examines the representation of non-Europeans, primarily Africans and Asians, in the graphic art of William Hogarth (1697-1764). The presence of non-European figures who stand on the margins of the image and observe the “strange” customs of the European protagonists is a persistent trope in Hogarth’s graphic art. Professor Wagner analyses the strategies of representation employed by Hogarth, and discusses the representation of the Other in 18th-century visual satire.
