Fine Arts Students at Art Basel 2016
As part of the Hong Kong Art Workshop, this year ran by Michelle Wong of Asia Art Archive (AAA) and Dr. Koon, in March, the students took part in AAA’s Open Platform Booth at Art Basel and talk to some of the experts and players who attend the fair. The conversations used a speed-dating formula as a way for students to get to the point quickly and to enable a range of experts to participate. Asian Art Essay Competition 2015-2016
Asian Art Essay Prize Competition 2015-2016 This is a call for entries for the annual University of Hong Kong Museum Society Asian Art Essay Prize. A prize of HK$2,000 will be offered to the winner. Gwangju Biennale Panel Discussion
A full range of contemporary art events took place in Hong Kong towards the end of March. On 23 March, we were delighted to have invited the curatorial team of Gwangju Biennale 2016, representatives of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, as well as local students and professionals in this field to come together at HKU for a panel discussion. In Conversation with Cai Guo-qiang and Yoshitomo Nara
Asia Society collaborated with the Department to offer the public an opportunity to meet with Yoshitomo Nara and Cai Guo-qiang, at a conversation with Michelle Yun (Senior Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia Society Museum) and Dr. Yeewan Koon (Associate Professor, Fine Arts Department, The University of Hong Kong). On 21 March 2016, despite the spring drizzles, our students, including the entire class of ARTH2090, and an enthusiastic body of art lovers of various backgrounds and interests flocked into Loke Yew Hall to hear them speak. Simultaneous translations of English, Chinese, and Japanese, were provided for the event.
Call for PhD / MPhil Applicants
The Fine Arts department invites applications for a fully-funded PhD or MPhil in art history. Projects in any field or period of art history will be considered providing that suitable supervision is available. Application is through the HKU graduate school, where details of the application process can be found. The deadline for application (in the first clearing round) is April 30 2016, and the successful applicant will be expected to begin her studies in the Autumn of 2016. Interested applicants are encouraged to consult the department’s website and to contact Dr. Opher Mansour (Postgraduate Coordinator) to discuss the application process.

Asian Art Essay Prize 2014-2015
Congratulations go to Shirley CHAN Bik-cheung as the winner of the 2014-15 Asian art essay prize sponsored by the University of Hong Kong Museum Society. Ms. Chan’s essay entitled “An Interpretation of Equestrian Holding a catapult in a Hunt by the Yuan-artist Zhao Yong” demonstrated an innovative analysis supported by original primary document-based research. The jury (consisting of Dr. Koon, the department’s undergraduate coordinator, Professor Clarke, and Dr. Hammers) considered Ms. Chan’s paper as particularly engaging and thoughtful. Postponing the Fine Arts tea gathering
The Department of Fine Arts is postponing the Tea Gathering that was to be held on October 6. This will allow interested individuals to participate in the protest march to defend autonomy at the University of Hong Kong. We will hold the Tea Gathering in January.
