Japanese art in the age of global encounters, 1400-1700

Lecturer: Caitlin KARYADI

6 credits

The course offers a new telling of Japanese art by way of its long history of exchange with places, peoples, and cultures beyond the Japanese archipelago. While anchored in Japan, the course will cross waters and time through objects that defy our current national art histories. In so doing, the course invites students to reorient their perspectives on the past through the diverse objects, peoples, and imaginaries that propelled cross-cultural exchange in Japan and beyond.
