This course focuses on the experiential dimensions of Chinese art and cultural practices. This course explores how artworks were historically encountered through movement, ritual participation, material engagement, and multisensory experience rather than through visual observation alone. Drawing on current scholarship in art history and material culture, the course combines lectures with museum visits, site-based learning, and hands-on workshops. Student may visit sites such as the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, local Chinese gardens, temples, and artist studios, while engaging directly with artistic practices through workshops led by local ink artists, bonsai practitioners, and ink-rubbing makers. Through these site visits and hands-on activities, students will engage directly with the sensory, material, and cultural dimensions of Chinese art and artistic practice.
