This course highlights the interconnectedness among humans, natural organisms, and the natural environment. The course examines key instances of human intervention in the natural world to reimagine historical ecologies of China. We will study the underrepresented planetary lives and the natural environment through various cultural practices, including religions, landscape tradition, fengshui, and vegetal and zoomorphic symbolisms. This course explores how art objects can heighten our awareness of past and present environmental issues, offering powerful insight into current challenges. Students will develop projects that tackle present or historical ecological issues highlighted by visual arts.
