Career Opportunities: Assistant or Associate Professor of Art History and Coordinator of the M.A. in Art History (Ref.: 492417)

The Department of Fine Arts, HKU, invites applications for the position of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (with tenure) in art history. The successful applicant will take leadership of the department’s new M.A. in art history, beginning September, 2019 (https://finearts.hku.hk/maah).  Applicants should have substantial, high-quality teaching experience and demonstrate a commitment to rigorous and innovative research. Specialization in Asian art, western art, or museum studies is preferred. Curatorial or related professional experience is a plus, as is related administrative experience.

The Department (https://finearts.hku.hk) is one of the leading art history faculties in Asia and includes specialists in Asian art (antiquity to the present day) and Western art (medieval to contemporary periods). We have on average 35 undergraduate majors per year, plus a small number of M.Phil. and Ph.D. students. The Department achieved outstanding results in Hong Kong’s last Research Assessment Exercise (2014). The Faculty of Arts, of which we are a part, is highly ranked internationally (currently 18 in QS and 29 in THE global rankings by Arts and Humanities subjects). Humanities research at HKU is well-supported, with excellent library resources and grant opportunities. Teaching load is normally three courses per year but this position will initially have a reduction to two courses per year (including one of the M.A. core courses) plus academic advising for M.A. students. All instruction is in English.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered, as well as annual leave and medical benefits.  The assistant professor salary range is currently HK$711,300 – $1,060,020 per annum (roughly US$91,192 – $135,900 at current exchange rates), while the associate professor salary range is HK$899,940 – $1,430,220.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. The appointment will commence by September 1, 2019. Associate Professors will be hired with tenure. Assistant Professors will be hired on a tenure-track contract. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment.

Applicants should apply online at the University’s career site (http://jobs.hku.hk) and upload an up-to-date C.V.; a cover letter detailing research plans, teaching abilities, and any relevant experience in graduate teaching and administration (maximum two pages); a writing sample; and a portfolio of past teaching materials and evaluations. Applicants should also have three confidential letters of recommendation sent by your recommenders to ap417@hku.hk. Applications (including all recommendation letters) should be submitted by January 15, 2019.
