6 credits
This is the second of the MA’s three compulsory core courses. Focused on art materials and practices of collecting and display, it introduces students to key institutions, professional practices, and debates within the art world, and to a range of objects, media and techniques that art historians, curators, and researchers are concerned with. Teaching is largely seminar and discussion-based, combined with hands-on experiences and site visits to collections and/or studios. In assessment, emphasis is placed on visual and technical description of artworks, connecting materials and display practices to interpretation and meaning-making, and on acquiring skills related to curation and exhibition.
