Exploring museums and exhibitions in London

Dr. Yeewan KOON and Dr. Roslyn Hammers led a group of Fine Arts students to the UK during the first week of December. The main focus of the trip was the Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition “Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700-1900” and its two days conference “The Making of Chinese Painting: 700 to the Present.” Students also visited the British Museum, in which they spent some time in viewing the temporary show “Shunga: Sex and Humour in Japanese art, 1600-1900,” learning about the Sir Percival David Collection with Dr. Stacey Pierson, as well as exploring the museum’s Southeast Asian storage with Dr. Alexandra Green. While students were given free time to navigate around London on their own, as a group they had a day trip to Oxford, which was sponsored by the Museum Society, to visit the Pitts River Museum and the Ashmolean Museum. A few postgraduates made yet another outing to Cambridge for a seminar at Needham Research Institute towards the end of the trip.
